Australia set fastest time on first day of competition at F1 in Schools World Finals 2018.
Australia broke the one-second barrier at the F1 in Schools World Finals 2018 in the opening day of the competition, being held at Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore. Horizon from Brighton Secondary School, Adelaide posted a time of 0.997 seconds, beating a USA team, Aeroflow Racing, with a time of 1.049 second, just 0.001 seconds ahead of third placed team, TNT Racing UDG from Mexico. The event was formally opened by Justinian Habner, Deputy Director, British High Commission Singapore.
The opening ceremony included the unveiling of the stunning new Formula 1 F1 in Schools World Champions trophy. The impressive sculptural design features the Formula 1 brand logo under an metallic silver F1 in Schools race car. The model featured is last year’s World Champions race car designed by the Australian Hyperdrive team. The engineering of the trophy will allow the car presented to be updated each year to replicate the design of the incumbent World Champions.
The first day of this year’s World Finals kicked off with a ‘flag-off’ F1 in Schools race with Justinian Habner putting his skills to the test against F1 in Schools founder and Chairman, Andrew Denford. Students then began the intensive judging sessions with the 50 teams, representing 22 countries, under the scrutiny of the experienced panel of judges, all vying to claim the title F1 in Schools World Champions 2018 and take home the new trophy, as well as university scholarships for City University, London and UCL Engineering.
FIA President, Jean Todt, sent a video message of support to the World Finals students, saying: I would like to congratulate you on reaching this point in the competition.…There are many different competencies you will need at the World Finals and they will all be useful to you for the rest of your professional life. I am sure that many of you will dream to one day be part of a Formula 1 team and I strongly encourage you to continue in this way and become a part of the motorsport community… I look forward to seeing which innovative design will be victorious.”
The World Finals continues tomorrow with more judging sessions, followed by the exciting Knock Out racing finale on Tuesday. The World Champions will be crowned on Wednesday evening by Formula 1 CEO, Chase Carey, at the Awards Celebration Gala Dinner, with a total of 23 awards to be presented to category winners.
Andrew Denford, commented after a busy day of ceremony, racing and judging, “We thank Justinian Habner for joining us today and his support for our programme. Every year I see the standards rise, the teams presenting themselves with ever increasing professionalism and the quality of the work more impressive. We showcase the talents of these students, exemplified by their striking, informative pit displays, confident and inspirational verbal presentations, as well as the skilful, innovative car designs. The World Finals go beyond this, with the friendships that have been formed and the keenness of the students to share their cultures.
The competition action continues tomorrow with more judging sessions and another round of racing. It concludes on Tuesday with the Unilever Williams Engineering Academy Assessment Centre and the thrilling Knockout Racing.
F1 in Schools challenges students to create their own Formula 1 team which is commissioned to design, construct and race the fastest miniature Formula 1 Car of the Future; a 21cm long scale model built from the F1 in Schools model block and powered by a compressed air cylinder. At the World Finals each team brings along a pit display, their cars and a written portfolio, as well as having prepared a verbal presentation for the judges. The cars race on a 20-metre track, with the cars covering the distance in around one second.
The F1 in Schools World Finals 2018 is held with the support of a host of sponsors including Formula 1, Denford, The Institution of Engineering and Technology, Autodesk, FIA Women in Motorsport Commission, City University of London, UCL Engineering, Acronis, Singapore Tourism Board, Singapore GP and Resorts World Sentosa.
