CAMS
Australian GT Championship revved up for Barbagallo
The CAMS Australian GT Championship heads west for the
first time in its history, taking to the Barbagallo circuit as part of
the V8 Supercars Perth SuperSprint this weekend. A strong field of cars has made the journey out, spearheaded by three
Audi R8 LMS' from the Melbourne Performance Centre stable. Championship leaders James Koundouris and Marcus Marshall got their eye
in at the circuit with a pre-event test day, where they were joined by
team-mates Geoff Emery, Greg Taylor and Barton Mawer. However they'll face stiff opposition from former series champ Klark
Quinn, who heads a five-pronged McLaren attack with three cars from Tekno
Autosports and Tony Walls' Objective Racing entry. Local ace Peter Rullo will look to put his experience to good use in the
Performance West Lamborghini Gallardo while Dean Canto will once again
partner Andrew Taplin in the Taplin Real Estate Lamborghini R-EX. The Lamborghini ranks are bolstered by Roger Lago, the man who led the
championship following the opening round in Adelaide who is looking to
bounce back following a tough outing in Round 2. Steven Richards, who expects the Babragallo circuit to suit the GT3
machines, once again takes the wheel of the BMW Team SRM M6 GT3 alongside
Max Twigg, with Ricky Capo coming off strong performance in Albert Park
in his Z4 GT3. Making its first entry into the CAMS Australian GT Championship is
Walkinshaw GT3, which will debut the brand new 2016 Porsche 911 GT3-R. Having shaken the car down at Winton and run as part of the Rennsport
event at Sydney Motorsport last weekend, the outfit is excited to make
its sports car racing debut. The experienced John Martin will steer the Morris Finance backed machine,
the event his first appearance at Barbagallo in a decade. Two races across the weekend await the CAMS Australian GT Championship
contenders, starting with practice and two qualifying sessions on Friday. A 60-minute race then follows on both Saturday and Sunday, including
compulsory pit stop times, to make up Round 3 of the Championship. All sessions from Qualifying 1 will be broadcast live on Foxtel on
Channel 506.
