Formule V8,3.5 2016

Second win of 2016 for Aurélien Panis (Arden Motorsport) in race 2 at the Red Bull Ring in the sixth event of 2016 championship. Thanks to an undercut pit-stop the French strikes back over Tom Dillmann (AVF), still leader of the championship with 189 points. On the podium also the youngest poleman in the history of the series, Matevos Isaakyan (SMP Racing), winner among the rookies.

Matevos Isaakyan (SMP Racing) keeps his position after the start, while Matthieu Vaxiviere (SMP Racing) and Louis Delétraz (Fortec Motorsports) fight for P2, with the Swiss good enough to rebuts the French. Isaakyan closes the first lap ahead of Delétraz, Vaxivere, Panis, Dillmann, Roy Nissany (Lotus), Egor Orudzhev (Arden Motorsport), René Binder (Lotus), Alfonso Ceils Jr (AVF) and Pietro Fittipaldi (Fortec Motorsports) to close the top-10. During the third lap Celis Jr. overtakes Binder gaining position n.8, while in the fourth Giuseppe Cipriani (Durango) ends in the gravel at turn 7 after a spin. In order to rescue his car during the fifth lap, Race control deployed safety-car. Two more laps and the race restarts, one lap later it's time for the pits. The first one to change tyres is Panis, followed by Celis Jr, Nissany, Yu Kanamaru (Teo Martin Motorsport) and Vitor Baptista (RP Motorsport). Then (lap 9) is the turn of Fittipaldi, Beitske Visser (Teo Martin Motorsport) and Marco Bonanomi (RP Motorsport). The Brasilian experiences a problem in fixing the rear left tyre. During the tenth lap Delétraz and Binder go to the pits. The leader is still Isaakyan, Vaxiviere stops during lap 12 and changes the tyres. The Russian driver gets the call from SMP box at 14th lap, while Dillman and Orudzhev go ahead. When pit lane closes at lap 16, Panis is leadind in front of Dillmann, Isaakyan, Delétraz, Orudzhev, Vaxiviere, Celis Jr, Kanamaru, Nissany and Baptista. On lap 20 Kanamaru gets a puncture in the rear right tire trying to pass Nissany, breaking in the occasion the front wing of the Israeli driver. One lap after there is a turnover between Delétraz and Orudzhev for P4, but later on the Swiss gets the upper hand in the middle sector. During lap 28 Fittipaldi takes over Binder after an off track excursion in the fifth corner.

After 30 laps the chequered flag declares a second seasonal win for Panis, the highest one on the podium between Dillmann and Isaakyan. Also Delétraz, Orudzhev, Vaxiviere, Celis, Baptista, Visser and Bonanomi end with points. For the Italian is the second finish in a row in the points after his comeback.

Aurélien Panis (Arden Motorsport)
“It has been a fantastic race, I’m really happy with that. The team found a fantastic strategy with an early pit-stop and I’ve been able to have a good pace after the pit. It helped me to overtake the cars in front, but already at the start I gained one position. A big thank to all Arden Motorsport staff”.

Tom Dillmann (AVF)
“It was okay since the start where I took one position. The pace was really good, we kept running pitting in the last lap of the window. Also compared to yesterday we had a great pace. As I was the quickest car on track we decided to go longer, so I moved from 5th to 2nd. Still good points, and ahead of my direct competitors, so it's a positive week-end and thanks to AVF”.

Matevos Isaakyan (SMP Racing)
“We had a really good pace. The safety-car cancelled the advantage of more or less two seconds I had in the first lap, but then I had a quite good restart. I made maybe a couple of mistakes before going back in the pit-lane, then we lost too much time there. I still don’t know why, but at the end of the day we’re on the podium, and rookie winner, so it's a positive result”.

Gary Horner, Team Principal Arden Motorsport
“We had a good pit-stop strategy which worked very well. Aurélien pushed really hard after the pit-stop, with a great pace. A very mature race from him, he made a really good job as well as the whole team, especially after we spent lots of time to rebuild the other car until 1:00 am this morning. So it's a very positive result for the team and I’m pleased for the hard work of all the guys”.
