Bad luck for Vanthoor in 24 Hours of the Ring

The
24 Hours of the Nürburgring is a cruel and unforgiving race, something that quite
too early on became clear for Marc Basseng, Le Mans winner Marcel Fässler,
Frank Stippler and Laurens Vanthoor in the #3 Phoenix Audi R8 LMS Ultra. Into
only 8 laps of the 24-hour race, German ace Frank Stippler went off, an
incident that left the German endurance race machine too badly damaged to
continue. 8 laps, with 23 hours to go, it’s not difficult to state that Laurens
Vanthoor was hugely disappointed, in a race where his team was clearly one of
the contenders for victory.
The week of the hardest 24-hours race of the year, started off very well for
the Phoenix quartet.
Laurens Vanthoor: “Our team looked very promising, with a great technical crew,
Phoenix, that boasts years of experience in this race. My teammates were also
superb, with of course the Swiss winner of last week’s Le Mans race, Marcel
Fässler and the German specialists Marc Basseng and Frank Stippler. The Audi
force is well known, which meant a perfect match between team, car and drivers.
Our qualifying result confirmed the strength of this cocktail, qualifying with
a 6th overall in the top 30.”
Despite perfect weather, very quickly dark clouds gathered above the team box.
Laurens Vanthoor: “Something went wrong and Frank couldn’t save the car. It’s a drama, but at least we are relieved that Frank is ok. There isn’t much more to
say, apart from the fact that next week things should be better in the third
round of the Blancpain Endurance Series at Paul Ricard.”
