Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup: Van Splunteren and Mul finish third in eventful race at Brands Hatch

(Hannover, 9.5.2016). Attempto Racing narrowly missed out on a points finish in an eventful Sprint Cup race at the iconic British circuit of Brands Hatch on the third race weekend of the Blancpain GT Series. Dutchmen Max van Splunteren (20) and Jeroen Mul (25) finished 13th in the number 100 Lamborghini Huracán GT3, missing out on a top-ten finish for the Hannover-based racing team by little more than a second. The duo was also denied victory in the Silver Cup classification by the same interval. However, they did take their place on the podium as runners-up in this class.

The two Dutch drivers were the best-placed Attempto Racing pair in the qualification race, in which the grid positions for the main race are determined. They qualified just ahead of team-mates Daniel Zampieri (25, Italy) and Patric Niederhauser (24, Switzerland) in the number 101 car. Italians Davide Valsecchi (29) and Marco Mapelli (28) were 28th in the number 77 Lamborghini Huracán GT3.

The team’s three cars completed the opening laps virtually in formation, until Zampieri, at the wheel of the best-placed of the team’s three Italian sports cars at the time, was forced to retire on lap four. The two remaining cars then crashed into each other on lap 15, resulting in Valsecchi spinning off into a run-off zone and dropping back from 20th to 33rd place.

And so it was that van Splunteren and Mul, who had taken over the driving duties following the pit stop, set about fighting their way through the field as the team’s final spearhead. Re-joining the race in 19th after the pit stop, Mul climbed to 13th before a safety car phase put an end to his progress. When the race re-started for the final ten minutes, the number 100 car held off several rival cars to finish 13th. Marco Mapelli, who had replaced compatriot Valsecchi at the wheel of the number 77 Lamborghini Huracán GT3, came home 28th.

“We took a big step forward this weekend. We had two cars in Q3, to which only the top 50 per cent of cars progress. We will fine-tune our qualifying performance a bit. With a bit of luck, top-five positions should then be possible. We can match the pace of the front-runners in the race. I would like to thank my team, as everyone was totally committed,” said Arkin Aka, Managing Director of Attempto.

Attempto Racing’s next outing in the Blancpain GT Series is also in England this weekend (14th-15th May), as Silverstone hosts a three-hour endurance race.
