There are many advantages about the composite discs compared to the steel ones. They can withstand much higher heat load and thus perform much better even at higher stress. Similarly their wear resistance is much higher, even though the friction coefficient between the composite disc and pads is much higher than the conventional steel brakes. However, the steel discs prove more sensitive engagement than the composite ones. It is also interesting, that one composite disc is manufactured in no less than 5 months. It is no surprise that one disc costs about 5000 EUR. As far as the weight is concerned, the CART steel brake discs weigh about 3 kg. The Formula 1 composite equivalent weighs only 1.4 kg.
