The change of a gear is done by rotating the shifting shaft, in which there is a kind of fork moving up and down in preset trajectories. Rotation of this shaft is controlled by a cam mechanism, which is driven by hydraulics according to the instructions of the CPU. Rotation of the shaft causes axial movement of the fork, which then locks the chosen cogwheel and activates the corresponding gearing.

Each gear is designed as an individual cartridge including the extras, bearings and oil ducts, which may be removed and changed for another one. Such a concept is important especially for setting the optimal gears for a specific circuit. The gearbox is of double-shaft design and to change gear it needs only 20 millisecond.
