BEIJING, 13th September 2011. This week Exim Bank Team China is leaving Asia, and travelling to the workshops located near Brussels, in order to prepare for the final round of the World Championship, to be held at San Luis in Argentina. Over a period of some ten days the team travelled with both Corvette C6.R cars from Ordos to Peking, competing in two races and a similar number of demonstration runs on the programme.
Chinese FIA GT1 World Championship tour a success!
The finale of the Chinese tour, in the Olympic Park, where two demonstration races were on the programme, was exceptionally impressive and that success was completely in line with what had already gone before in China. In front of 50,000 spectators the Beijing GT1 World Supercars event took place, held between the two previous Olympic Games monuments, the Bird's Nest and the Water Cube, with as highlight a pit stop competition, where Exim Bank Team China finished in third place. On the other hand the races in Ordos and Beijing were also a great success, with packed grandstands. For Exim Bank Team the sporting highpoint of this tour in front of a home crowd was undoubtedly the championship race in Beijing, with a fifth place for the Michael Rossi and Nico Verdonck do, whilst the car manned by Ho-Pin Tung and Jeroen den Boer crossed the finish line in eleventh place. Earlier in the day these teams finished in eighth and fourteenth places. Exactly one week earlier, in Ordos, the team were less successful with as outcome a best result of twelfth place going to Ho-Pin Tung and Jeroen den Boer.
Nico Verdonck and Michael Rossi have the crowds on the edge of their seats! During the championship race in Beijing the French and Belgian Corvette drivers started out just within the top-10, but a brilliant race, in extremely difficult conditions, ensured a top-5 ranking for the Exim Bank Team China Corvette C6.R at the finish. At times the rain was so intense that the Safety Car came on to the track and yet both drivers in the yellow and red Corvette managed to climb up five places and this to the utter delight of the home crowds. Exim Bank Team China can hardly wait to battle it out once again on home ground!
