F1 INSPIRES NEW ‘LERS’ (LAUNCH ENERGY RECOVERY SYSTEM) TECH REGS FOR F1 IN SCHOOLS WORLD FINALS 2015

F1 in Schools mirrors the world of F1 in many areas – from team uniforms and pit presentations to innovative design solutions and car designs, as well as controversy and rules infringements.  Following a headline-grabbing launch device last year, the 2015 World Finals, being held at Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore, this week will feature new technical regulations, with the introduction of LERS, Launch Energy Recovery System, a development which legislates the use of grid launch devices.

The 2014 F1 in Schools World Champions, Colossus F1, from England, used a controversial LERS device to smash the F1 in Schools long-standing Fastest Track Time World Record, with their F1 in Schools car racing down the track in a time of 1.003 seconds.  The team’s ‘Air Cushion’ design prompted the revision of the official technical regulations for 2015 and the introduction of LERS.

Former Formula 1 Technical Director and F1 in Schools Head of Judges, Gary  (Charlie Whiting) Anderson, was instrumental in the development of the LERS regulations. He says, “Just as in the world of F1, we see new innovation at the World Finals each year, and last year we saw an air cushion device which pushed the boundaries of the competition.  For this year, we’ve developed regulations for this type of device and the LERS regs allowed teams to implement R&D programmes for LERS and which they can race with throughout the competition.

“Arriving in Singapore today I’ve had a look at the various concepts that the teams have created for their LERS and on first glance I’m very impressed with the ingenuity shown by these talented young engineers. It will be fascinating to see how their design solutions translate into speed on track and whether any of these can break the world record set last year”.

The F1 in Schools World Finals 2015 kicks off today with the teams arriving and completing scrutineering procedures before the racing starts after the opening ceremony on Sunday. The event will be streamed live on the F1 in Schools Youtube channel, https://www.youtube.com/user/F1inSchoolsUK with all the racing action close up, team interviews and event updates.

The F1 in Schools World Finals 2015 take place with the assistance of a host of supporters including Formula One Management, Singapore GP, The Institution of Engineering and Technology, Autodesk, Singapore Tourism Board, City University London, UCL Engineering, Luke 1977and the Official Venue, Resorts World Sentosa.
