The firm was established by Bruce McLaren, born in Auckland (New Zeland), in Coolnbrook not far from the London airport in 1963. The original name was McLaren Motor Racing Ltd. The first cars used Chevrolet and Oldsmobile engines. The first formula 1 appeared in 1966, at first powered by Serenissima engines, BRM V12, then Ford Cosworth. Bruce raced the car bearing M7A marking. Later he built the above mentioned M9A with four-wheel drive (1969). The body riveted of alluminium sheets, reinforced with steel sections. The fuel tanks were situated on both sides of a driver, ie. two, cross connected. The Girling braking discs 292mm.
