McLaren ace Morcom visits Bonnyrigg Heights Primary School

Nathan Morcom has paid a visit to Bonnyrigg Heights Primary School, talking to students about his motor sport career.

Morcom, driver of the DPO McLaren 650S GT3, currently sits third in the CAMS Australian GT Championship heading into the third round in Barbagallo this weekend.

However, before heading to Perth the 24-year-old took time out to speak with more than 100 primary school students, revealing what it's like to be a professional racing driver and his career to date.

"It's great to be able to go out and talk about what we do," Morcom explained.

"I started karting when I was about their age, so hopefully I can help inspire them to go racing too."

Morcom's career started in go-karts at age eight, where he won a host of state and national championships.

His career saw the youngster progress into Formula Ford and Formula 3, following a stint racing in the United States and Europe.

Despite the variety of cars he's competed in, Morcom says his favorite is the Tekno Autosports prepared McLaren 650S GT3 he currently drives.

"The McLaren is so fast, it's a lot of fun to drive," he told the Bonnyrigg Heights Primary School students.

"The brakes are really good and it's got lots of power from the twin-turbo charged engine, which can make it a little bit tricky.

"But it's a great car, and of all the cars I've driven in my career it's probably my favourite."

After talking through his racing experiences, Morcom spent time answering student's questions before showing them his race winning BMW 335i.

Morcom and V8 Supercars driver Chaz Mostert shared the car in late March to win the inaugural Bathurst 6 Hour Production Car event.

The victory ranks as one of Morcom's greatest accomplishments in motor sport, though admits it's only made him hungrier for title success in the CAMS Australian GT Championship.

"I'm always trying to win," explained the McLaren driver. "We've had a good start to the year with a win at the Grand Prix, my first Australian GT win, and now I'm looking for more!

"We go to Perth this weekend and hope for a couple of good races there and then head to Townsville," he added.

"I'm looking forward to the two races in New Zealand at the end of the year too. I've not raced at either circuit before so that will be a new challenge.

"Hopefully we go alright and I can win the championship there!"

Morcom will be in action at the third round of the CAMS Australian GT Championship at Babragallo Raceway in Perth this weekend.

All sessions from Qualifying 1 on Friday will be broadcast live on Foxtel, channel 506.
