The temple of Italian motorsport in the royal park of Monza could cherish everything. This circuit, the fastest and the most dangerous in rain, they had already secured the Constructors' Cup (since GP Hungary) and the Champion's Cup (since GP Belgium). This time they used all their effort so that the second man of the classification, Rubens Barrichello, could get at least 8 points to secure the vice-champion title, which was pretty obvious from the practices' results. Only the first practice did not go as it should (Michael 9th, Rubens 10th) but the second one left no one in doubt that Ferrari is chasing its prey with a bulldog's persistence. Barrichello took his 11th pole-position ahead of Montoya and M.Schumacher. The Sunday morning was a shock: it was raining cats and dogs! All the practices had been taken in dry weather so the teams could just throw the data to a dustbin and start again. To make it even more interesting, the rain stopped before the race so tyres were being chosen literally to the last moment. Most pilots decided for dry tyres, except for Barrichello who left the others far behind - alas, no longer than the lap 5. Alonso got over him and Barrichello went to pit stop for dry footwear. Button made his way to the front, following his strategy of one pit stop. That was the moment when the winner Rubens Barrichello overtook him. Michael Schumacher started the race with extreme caution on dry tyres, which did not work anyway. He skidded in the first lap and sank to the 15th position. However, as the track got dry he managed the race with ease. He got to the 2nd position behind Rubens and true to his word did not attack. Barrichello therefore could drive peacefully to collect his first victory this season, 8th in his career. Michael came second, Button kept his 3rd place and Sato came 4th. That proved to be quite important because Alonso retired and Trulli finished at the 10th place, without points. Thus B.A.R. made its way to the second place in the Constructors Table. Button also practically ensured the 3rd place in the Drivers Table, with 71 points. Consequently, the most interesting fight is to be seen probably behind him among Trulli - 44, Alonso - 45 and Montoya - 42 points, in the last 3 GPs in China, Japan and Brazil. |
