Grand prix 2004
Seemingly, there was nothing to win at the Interlagos Circuit. Perhaps only Rubens Barrichello was motivated to win at last! His home GP seemed to be voodoo cursed for him. He scored just once, in 1994, 4 points for the 4th place. That was his only success until Sunday. He was proving his serious will to win from the first practice to qualification. He was the fastest. So he took the pole, accompanied by another Southamerican - Montoya from Columbia. There were Räikkönen and Massa (another Brazilian), Button and Sato, R.Schumacher and Alonso, Trulli and Fisichella to follow. Michael Schumacher took no better than the 18th position. He had an accident on Saturday morning and his engine caught fire and he had to take the spare car. He managed to drive the 8th best time but had to go back 10 places on the grid. Rain spoiled the relaxed atmosphere in the last moment and nobody could really guess how long it would last. The teams tried variety of compounds, wet, intermediate and even dry tires. Räikkönen coped with the conditions best an took over Barrichello as early as the first lap. Montoya, Massa and Sato lined up behind. Button got some smoke coming out of his engine and retired in the 3rd lap. He gained the second vice-champion position earlier so he did not mind. The rain stopped and the track was getting dry pretty fast. The drivers went to pits already in the lap 5 to get new tires. Those who chose dry ones from the very begging gained most. One of them, Alonso, took the pitstop last. The order settled at Montoya, Räikkönen, R.Schumacher, Button, Barrichello, Alonso and M.Schumacher. There was another shower during the race, which however did not change anything. The final standings: 1st Montoya (COL) BMW-Williams, 2nd Räikkönen (FIN) McLaren-Mercedes, 3rd Barrichello (BRA) Ferrari, 4th Alonso (SPA) Renault, 5th R.Schumacher (GER) BMW-Williams, 6th Sato (JAP) BAR-Honda, 7th M.Schumacher (GER) Ferrari, 8th Massa (BRA) Sauber-Petronas.Juan Pablo MONTOYA reached his first victory this year (4 total) after a weak season (2nd once, 3rd once, 4th twice, 5th 5x, 7th once). That was his biggest success and a prospect for McLaren where he is aiming after Williams.Rubens BARRICHELLO did not win again but could be comforted a little by the 3rd place, which has been his best standing in home GP so far.
