A gap in the clouds decided about the Grand Prix of Australia. The race was most influenced by a nonsense qualification which commenced on the wet circuit. When the track got a little dry some drivers changed to dry tires. Michael Schumacher was one of them. However, as soon as he got to the track the rain started again, marking all other times. The Sunday's dry qualification could not really make any difference. Kimi Räikkönen remembered the last year's unlucky season when his engine died out making him start from the pitlane. Giancarlo Fisichella kept his leading position from start to finish. Rubens Barrichello proved some skill climbing from the 11th to the final 2nd place. Michael Schumacher also did well, from the 18th on the grid to the 7th, however had to retire after a collision with Nick Heidfeld. The 3rd on the podium, Fernando Alonso, took his Renault from the 13th position. Therefore Renault is, quite justly, in the lead of the Constructors' Table.
