Farce in Indy.
It all started already in Friday's session when R.Schumacher lost control of his car after his rear tire burst hitting the wall not far from the finish line. Quite a replay of his crash from the last year that made him miss another 6 GPs. This time he was luckier. But headache and sight problems prevented him from starting. The tire manufacturer Michelin failed to identify the cause of the problem. However they expressed their opinion according to which the circuit was unsafe for their tires. They tried to bring in other set of tires from Barcelona, which never arrived anyway, therefore there was no other way but to notify all teams that the Michelin tires could not guarantee the drivers the safety standards. Consequently, the teams tried to persuade the organizers to add a chicane at the beginning of the home straight, which would limit the critical speed. Ferrari objected to such a solution pretty firmly. Neither the suggestion to change the tires during the race found much support. As David Coulthard said: "adult men couldn't reach a compromise". As a result we all could see a bitter day both for F1 and for 120 thousand viewers. The 7 teams using the Michelin tires unanimously and with solidarity decided not to risk the health and lives of their drivers. 14 pilots went to pit stop after the warm-up lap. So there was only a torso of six cars with the Bridgestone tires: Ferrari, Jordan and Minardi. They took totally uninteresting ride during which the only risk was a near crash of both Ferraris after the second pitstop. M.Schumacher and R.Barrichello were then sharply reminded through the radio about the unconditional need for both of them to finish gaining 18 points for the team. Jordan with 11 and Minardi with their first 7 points in the season also got their bite. M.Schumacher took his 84th victory, the first this season. No matter that, he made it clear after the race that it probably wasn't the right way to win the first GP this year. Just like the disappointed viewers did. The question is - what now?
