F1 comments Miroslav Sanytrák
The start is wet again, the rain started a couple minutes before the race. There are about 200 hundred thousand viewers, which is the capacity of the stadium. The cars are wearing intermediate and the race starts. L.Hamilton blasts off first, close behind there are K.Räikkönen, F.Massa and F.Alonso. N.Heidfeld's start was excellent, he is pushing almost to K.Räikkönen, however he spins and falls backwards to the 6th place. Before this race, L.Hamilton was under investigation concerning the incident in the previous GP. Everybody wished that he would lose points as a penalty, which did not happen. Consequently Hamilton started the GP with a realistic expectation to become the youngest World Champion in history, moreover in his first season in F1. None has done that before. A mist of water sprays emerges over the circuit again. But it is different from Japan. In the lap 46 the standings are: Hamilton, K.Räikkönen, Massa, Alonso, Coulthard, Liuzzi, Heidfeld, Kubica. Hamilton gets ever faster with each lap. The first four places mean a distance of 5.6s. The weather is unstable, but still rather rainy. A.Davidson retires after 13 laps, having parked his car with a technical trouble. In the lap 14 Hamilton has the advantage of 7 s and is the first one to pit, only to refuel, the tires unchanged. K.Räikkönen comes to the lead, the information on weather is bad, a heavy rain is expected any moment. 39 laps to the finish comes another man to the pit stop - F.Massa, again only to refuel. K.Räikkönen holds the fastest lap at the moment. There is a lot of passing on the positions 5 and further on. F.Alonso only refuels as well, however you can spot the wear on tires already. A.Sutil with his Spyker over spins, exits the track and comes back again. K.Räikkönen is the last one from the top four to pit, or, in fact, merely to refuel like the others. Similarly the other teams hesitate with changing tires, everybody is waiting for the weather, the circuit is wet, but it is not raining. 30 laps to go, dry tires are put on, Schumacher retires after a collision with Sutil, who quits too. K.Räikkönen gets on the level with Hamilton, but does not pass him, as there are yellow flags along the whole circuit in the lap 28. After a while K.Räikkönen takes the leading position having passed Hamilton. N. Rosberg spins, Kovalainen exits the track again, they both stay in the race though. K.Räikkönen is 1.5s faster per one lap. Hamilton goes slow, his rear right tire is pretty worn. Alonso catches up, driving the fastest times at the moment. The race turns pretty dramatic for Hamilton. L.Hamilton has about 10cm wide strip of white on his rear tire, as if the layers of rubber got separated. He goes on though, with a lot of trouble, skids, comes to the pit stop but ends up in the gravel 25 laps before the end. The marshals are trying to move the car off the gravel, shot of R.Dennis, obviously upset. This is the key moment of the Championship. Hamilton retires from the race, the final stage of the drama is shifted to Brazil. Both K.Räikkönen's and F.Alonso's chances to win the title are quite big. I can sense a major team's mistake of calling Hamilton late to the pit stop. His nerves worked and Lewis, to put is bluntly, didn't stand his ground, was careless and ended up in the gravel.
