Since the first practice it was a tug-o-war for the best time. On Friday it was Alonso, on Saturday morning Schumacher, then the qualification started which drew most attention. M. Schumacher brought the excitement. He reached the best time but in the last corner before the finish he mysteriously slowed down and stopped. Alonso drove right behind him having reached better split times. He had to slow down there and took the second best time. The marshals then spent 8 hours scrutinizing the TV record of Schumacher's in-board camera in the critical moment. They came to a conclusion that Michael braked unusually overly and unduly causing thus his engine to stall. Consequently he was deprived of all times and put to the last position on the grid. Schumacher started from the pit lane then. The Monte Carlo race course is famous for the fact that it is very uneasy to pass anybody there. The aerodynamics is not as important as on other circuits. The place on the grid and driver's skill is much more important here. Alonso started from the pole position and took his role of the favourite in an excellent way. He was leading from the start to the finish. K. Räikkönen stuck close to him in the first part, which didn't change even after the first pit stops. It was Sato who had the strongest influence on the race, when he retired in the lap 45 and Safety Car had to be deployed. The 4 laps to follow driving behind it preventing overheated engines to cool properly took their toll with Webber first and two laps later also Räikkönen. Both Alonso's most serious rivals retired with smoke coming out of their engines. All was clear afterwards. There was Montoya 15 s behind Alonso and Coulthard another half a minute back. M. Schumacher systematically worked his way forwards, however he only got as far as one place behind Barrichello. It was an amazing performance of him. Although he lost 6 points in the fight for title, all contestants must take him seriously. After Monte Carlo, there are the fast courses in England, Canada, USA, France and Germany to follow where the Ferrari cars would be in totally different position then in the slow roulette.

Alonso well deserved his victory, he didn't make any mistake and just didn't leave any space for his rivals. He came down to the records as the 38th pilot to win in Monaco. For the first time so far. The most victories from here went to Senna 6, G. Hill a M. Schumacher 5. Also Coulthard tasted the sweet success (two victories - 2000, 2002) as he brought his Red Bull to the podium for the first time.
