And what a show! Most teams sent new or upgraded current cars on the track in Imola at the GP of San Marino. Michael Schumacher and Felipe Massa improved their standings in the practice and especially in the qualification.
Thus they took the first step in granting the wish of the big boss Montezomolo that he would want to see his cars win again. New chassis, new engine, new aerodynamics - all played well for Ferrari. Schumacher beat the only record that he hasn't beaten yet: 65 pole positions of Ayrton Senna. Massa took the 4th best time. Button was no surprise, unlike Barrichello's third position. But only until the start. Alonso was no better than 5th, there was Ralf Schumacher with Toyta next to him. McLarens stood in the 4th row, which was a disappointment for both Ron Denis and Norbert Haug. Mainly Räikkönen was under fire for making a number of unnecessary mistakes. It was obvious also during the start. Schumacher started perfectly, followed by Button, Massa got to the 3rd place, Barrichello fell 4 places backwards. Similarly Räikkönen lost one position. After the first pit stop Alonso soon was right behind Schumacher. From then on you could watch a show the Formula 1 hasn't witnessed for a long time. Alonso kept attacking within reason - and it was not enough for well-prepared Schumacher in the perfect car. Especially coming out of corners and long straights, where it would be possible to overtake, he didn't give a chance to his direct rival. Later they were accompanied by an unnerving duels of Massa and Räikkönen, and Button and Fisichella. Montoya on the 3rd and Webber on the 6th positions took their laps relatively peacefully. Both teams handled Schumacher and Alonso without mistakes in the pits so the order didn't change. Michael came for his 85th victory - disregarding the last year's GP of USA with only six cars, it was the first time since the GP of Japan 2004. The victory was well deserved with a promise of other interesting fights in the GPs. Alonso may still lead by 15 points but Ferrari is sure to make everything to swing the balance to their side.Final standings: 1. M.Schumacher (GER) Ferrari, 2. Alonso (SPA) Renault, 3. Montoya (COL) McLaren, 4. Massa (BRA) Ferrari, 5. Räikkönen (FIN) McLaren), 6. Webber (AUS) Williams, 7. Button (ANG) Honda, 8. Fisichella (ITA) Renault. No points: R.Schumacher, Barrichello etc. After 4 races: 36 Alonso, 21 M.Schumacher, 18 Räikkönen, 15 Fisichella and Montoya, 13 Button, 9 Massa, 7 R.Schumacher, 6 Webber, 5 Heidfeld and Villeneuve.Constructors Championship: 51 Renault, 33 McLaren, 30 Ferrari, 15 Honda, 10 BMW Sauber, 8 Williams, 7 Toyota, 2 Red Bull.Michael Schumacher made no secret of his joy over the victory but also a warning. He thanked the team management, mechanics and engineers, however reminded that it was merely the first step and the team is facing a long season during which they must prove that the success wasn't accidental. An interesting poll among the Ferrari fans suggested that the team should consist of Michael Schumacher and Räikkönen in the next season.
