After the 2 victories of M. Schumacher it was an obvious question: will Alonso succeed in winning his home GP in Barcelona deflecting thus Schumacher's attack at the title? There was a simple calculation, if the Ferrari pilot kept winning and Alonso was coming second, it would take seven GPs to lose his 13 point advantage, i.e. at Hockenheim. That was, of course, unthinkable for Renault. Alonso stared in Friday's practice, Michael Schumacher was faster on Saturday morning. The impatiently expected qualification went better for Renault, as both their cars took the first two positions ahead of the Ferraris. Barrichello with Honda surprised (5th) just like R. Schumacher with Toyota(6th). There were the drivers of the same teams in the next row as well. Räikkönen with McLaren took the 9th position, which was a big disappointment for Ron Denis (Montoya 12th). Similarly disappointed was BMW - Heidfeld 10th, Villeneuve after the change of the engine 22nd.

The weather for the GP of Spain was pleasant. It wasn't hot and there was no threat of rain. However, it was the rough surface of the circuit that worried all teams, literally destroying the tires, especially the left front ones in fast corners. Therefore nobody even thought of the strategy of 1 pitstop. The tires wouldn't stand that. So the two pit stops' team strategy could decide the race once more. The Renaults' first row position allowed Alonso to drive away from his rivals and Fisichella to delay both Ferraris behind. That went well until the first pit stop. After that, M. Schumacher got right behind Alonso, but Alonso wouldn't take any chances. He kept the stabile advantage of 10s and coming to the pits for the second time, Schumacher wasn't able to gain enough time to come back on the first place. Alonso increased the advantage to 18 s. Speaking of the top drivers, Montoya and R. Schumacher retired. Renault could celebrate not only the individual Alonso's victory, but also, after the third place of Fisichella, the team's leading position. Ferrari was left a little bit behind this time, but they are definitely going to be a tough rival. Räikkönen did very well from the start to the finish and came fifth. There were both Hondas after him, Button and Barrichello. Heidfeld took one point. Coulthard was the most disappointed one in Barcelona. He was racing his 200th GP, but crashed as soon as the qualification and came 15th when starting from the 21st place. F. Massa had the fastest lap for the first time.
