It is interesting to take a look at the history of the GP of the USA. There have been the F1 races since 2000. Häkkinen won once, the other victories were for M. Schumacher, 4 times in a row. The runners up are Räikkönen and Coulhard. Alonso hasn't reached any points so far. The present time did not change much on this. M. Schumahcer stared in the practice ahead of Fisichella and Alonso. His teammate Massa followed closely, so the first row went to Ferrari. Behind them, there were Fisichella and Barrichello, Alonso and Villeneuve, Button and R. Schumacher, Räikkönen, Heidfeld and Montoya. Obviously, Ferrari was getting ready for a general attack on Renault's dominance. The Indy circuit is a tire eater. We still remember clearly last year, when the Michelin drivers did not start the race at all and only 6 Bridgestone cars participated. The French tried harder this year, however Bridgestone still was a bit better. And Ferrari managed to tune their cars performance with them in an excellent manner. Trulli had to have his rear wing changed and therefore started from the pit lane.Half empty stalls could witness a start which quickly changed into the cemetery for a third of cars. Heidfeld came out of the track somersaulting and Klien, Liuzzi, Montagny, Montoya, Räikkönen, Speed and Webber had to retire after collisions. Button took a hit as well - and retired soon afterwards. When Monteiro and Villeneuve finished later on, there were only half drivers left. After the deployment of the Safety Car the order was: Massa, M. Schumacher, Alonso, Fisichella, Barrichello, R. Schumacher, Trulli, Rosberg, Coulthard, Albers. Massa was in the lead till the first pit stop. Michael Schumacher took his place then without difficulty and went for the victory. This time Alonso looked for an ideal down force and Michelin grip in vain. He fell behind as far as the fifth position. Fisichella was more successful this time, taking very good lap times, which was no match for Ferrari though. R. Schumacher wasn't lucky again in the end when his front wheel bearing gave up. There were only 6 drivers with full race length in the finish.Michael Schumacher's sixth victory on his favourite circuit gave some hints. Above all, Ferrari is dead serious about the fight for the title and they stand a good chance on fast circuits. He gained 6 points to Alonso and there is only 19 point difference now, which is not problem without a solution for M. Schumacher. It was the first time this year without Alonso on the podium. And what would be with McLaren in the second half of the Championship - that's a big question. |
