The F1 in Schools World Finals 2014 is set to be trending on twitter next month with the launch of a Twitter challenge for the 38 teams competing for the World Champions title.

This year’s event is being held in Abu Dhabi from 16th to 19th November, coinciding with the final round of the 2014 Formula One World Championship the following weekend. Through the introduction of a Twitter challenge for teams, the event will use the global power of twitter and other social media to drive the awareness and popularity of the F1 in Schools programme. With 22 countries represented at the 2014 World Finals and over 250 students involved in the competition, it is estimated that the social media campaign can reach an audience in excess of 10 million.

As the students prepare to take part in this global competition, F1 in Schools has challenged the teams to use the power of twitter to market themselves and their sponsors, with an UP Mini 3D printer on offer to the highest ranking team.

Andrew Denford, Founder and Chairman of F1 in Schools says of the challenge, “Twitter is a great tool for businesses to promote their brand and is extensively used in Formula 1, by the teams, drivers and sponsors. The F1 in Schools programme is always keen to embrace technology and drive awareness through various communications platforms.

“We know how powerful Twitter can be and believe this is a great opportunity for the teams to gain a better understanding of its impact and benefits to them and their sponsors. We are already seeing a huge growth in F1 in Schools related Twitter traffic and I think it will be a closely fought competition between the teams. Students are prolific tweeters and the main demographic for this social media tool, as well as using other platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest, so it’s great to be able to integrate them into the World Finales event this year.”

The F1 in Schools World Finals 2014 take place with the assistance of a host of sponsors and supporters including Yas Marina Circuit, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, The Institution of Engineering and Technology, Autodesk, City University London, Etihad Airways, Tourism and Cultural Authority Abu Dhabi, Yas Island.AE and Radisson Blu Hotel.

About F1 in Schools

F1 in Schools challenges students to create their own Formula One team which is commissioned to design, construct and race the fastest miniature Formula One Car of the Future; a 21cm long scale model built from a block of balsa wood and powered by a compressed air cylinder. Each team of between three and six students creates a ‘pit’ display and showcases their work in developing their race car. At the World Finals each team will bring along a pit display, their cars and portfolio, as well as having prepared a verbal presentation for the judges. The cars race on a 20 metre track, with the cars covering the distance in just over one second, a speed barrier which is yet to be broken by any student team since it was set by Team FUGA from Northern Ireland at the 2007 World Finals with a time of 1.020 seconds.

F1 in Schools aims to help change perceptions of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) by creating a fun and exciting learning environment for young people to develop an informed view about careers in engineering, Formula One, Science, marketing and technology.
